The Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society is pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Hauenstein, Ph.D., as assistant research professor within the Lucy Institute and as part of the Center for Social Science Research (CSSR). Hauenstein’s research focuses on applying statistical and data science techniques to answer fundamental questions in civil and international conflict and security.
“I’m thrilled to join the CSSR and to lend my expertise to their work supporting researchers across campus,” said Hauenstein. His work in designing sustainable transitions from violent conflict, he emphasized, “will contribute to the Lucy Institute’s broader mission of using data science for public good.”
“Matt possesses considerable substantive knowledge of international conflict and security, a rich understanding of social science research design, and expertise in cutting-edge methodological techniques,” added Brian Fogarty, Ph.D., Director of the CSSR. “His appointment substantially enhances the CSSR’s commitment to improving the quality and efficiency of social science research at Notre Dame. I look forward to Matt playing an integral role in the Lucy Institute and making valuable contributions to new Notre Dame initiatives in democracy and computational science.”
Prior to this appointment, Hauenstein was a data scientist for the Applied Analytics & Emerging Technology Lab at the Lucy Institute. Previously, he was a Visiting Scholar (2021-2022) and a Postdoctoral Research Associate (2018-2021) at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies in the Keough School of Global Affairs at Notre Dame. Hauenstein holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Political Science from Florida State University and B.A. in International Studies from Emory University.
As part of the Lucy Institute, the CSSR is dedicated to improving the quality and efficiency of social science research at the University of Notre Dame by working with faculty, students, and staff across all academic disciplines. The three main functions of the CSSR are to support Notre Dame faculty and researchers with social science projects, to conduct original research as principal investigators in partnership with other Notre Dame researchers across the world, and to provide quantitative and computational social science training and support.
