Bo Pei

Bo Pei, a postdoctoral associate jointly supported by the University of Notre Dame’s Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society and Notre Dame (ND) Learning has accepted a tenured-track assistant professor position in instructional technology at the University of South Florida (USF).

While at Notre Dame, Pei conducted research under the supervision of Ying (Alison) Cheng, associate director of the Lucy Family Institute and professor in the Department of Psychology. Pei’s work has involved interdisciplinary collaboration with faculty from ND Learning, the Department of Economics, Mathematics, and Chemistry and Biochemistry to promote trustworthiness and fairness in learning analytics. His projects examine student learning behavior data, analyze student learning patterns, and provide targeted insights to instructors with the goal of closing learning performance gaps and promoting equitable education.

On Pei’s work, Dr. Cheng reflects, “Bo has contributed a unique perspective in assessing data from learning management systems. His emphasis on enhancing student thriving, as well as in assessment analytics to target educational challenges, has enabled instructors to examine and address performance gaps in informed ways.”

At USF, Pei will continue his research and teach courses on learning analytics, AI in education, and data visualization. Speaking about his appointment, Pei said, “My training at Lucy Family Institute has been instrumental in helping to advance my research on artificial intelligence (AI) in education as well as in promoting justice and inclusion in learning environments. In my new role, I hope to make these techniques more accessible to faculty and students in order to better support teaching and learning practices.”
