Community-Engaged Internship Experience
The Civic Innovation Lab offers an internship experience grounded in the Community-Engaged Educational Ecosystem Model (C-EEEM) bringing together individuals from various sectors such as educational institutions, local government, and community organizations—to address our community’s most pressing challenges.

We prioritize regional talent development, assembling intern teams from local universities, state colleges, community colleges, and high schools. The interns, studying various disciplines, contribute a range of perspectives that we believe are key to our success. The unique experience offers a space for students to innovate, be creative, and translate their classroom knowledge into tangible community benefits.
Internship Details & Benefits
- Duration: 8 weeks, 30 hours per week
- Term: June – August (summer session)
- Location: South Bend and Elkhart
- Hourly rates: College interns are paid $15/hour, while high school interns receive $13/hour.
- Eligibility: Open to University of Notre Dame students, and college and high school students aged 16 and above from the South Bend-Elkhart region.

Each year, the Civic Innovation Lab highlights the impact made by the interns within the region. Discover how their experiences have shaped their academic and career aspirations.
Mentorship Program
The Civic Innovation Lab (CIL) actively engages professionals from private, public, and nonprofit organizations in the region as mentors for its summer internship teams. CIL provides comprehensive training and orientation to mentors, sharing best practices in guiding students on their projects before the internship program starts. Mentors dedicate 1 hour per week throughout the 8-week program to meet with teams and provide technical expertise.
- Expert Guidance: Receive technical expertise and support from experienced professionals.
- Networking Opportunities: Engage with a network of local professionals involved in civic innovation.
- Skill Development: Gain valuable mentorship in leadership, project management, design thinking, and diversity and inclusion.
- STEM Contribution: Contribute to STEM workforce development in the region.

- Returning Interns: Previous high school interns are welcome and encouraged to apply again as college students.
