The University of Notre Dame’s Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society has appointed Michele M. Martin ’88,’90 M.A. as executive director, effective October 7, 2024.
In this role, Martin oversees the Lucy Family Institute’s external partnerships and works to bolster the growth of the Institute’s initiatives. She will be responsible for implementing the Institute’s strategy, mission, and goals and fostering communication and collaboration with partner units and research programs across campus.
As executive director, Martin will also play an important role in aligning the Institute’s efforts with the University’s strategic framework by working with leaders of the Institute’s centers and labs to implement impactful programs that link to the University’s strategic initiatives and priorities, including poverty, health and well-being, data and computational science, ethics, and democracy.
“The Lucy Family Institute, under the leadership of founding director Nitesh Chawla, is pushing the frontier of data, artificial intelligence, and society to advance the common good,” Martin said.“Through measurable impact in all aspects of scholarship, research, and education, the Institute is innovating new applications to truly be a force for good. I look forward to working with the stakeholders and partners to share this research to drive positive change for the local and global communities that we mutually serve.”
Martin partnered with the Lucy Family Institute in 2022 to launch the Health Equity Data Lab, which collaborates with interdisciplinary researchers from academia, industry, and community partners to identify and address health inequities.
“Michele brings extensive experience in directing innovation strategy to the Lucy Family Institute,” said Chawla, Institute director and Frank M. Freimann Professor of Computer Science and Engineering. “Her dedication to supporting the Health Equity Data Lab immediately stood out as a testament to her commitment to inclusive and responsible data and AI research for the common good. Over the past year, I’ve enjoyed getting to know Michele and am thrilled to welcome her to the Lucy team.”
Prior to joining the University of Notre Dame, Martin served as an Accenture advisory and innovation lead.
A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, she holds a bachelor of arts in the Program of Liberal Studies and a master of arts in systematic theology.
