AI Governance Initiative Summer Internship

The AI Governance Initiative is a project launched by the Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society. The Initiative will be directed by Nuno Moniz (Associate Research Professor, Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society) and Tom Mustillo (Associate Professor of Politics at the Keough School of Global Affairs, Director of the Minor in Data Science, and Fellow of the Kellogg Institute for International Studies and faculty affiliate for the Lucy Institute for Data & Society). The initiative’s primary objective is to help shape AI Policy and Regulation at the state and national levels toward solving urgent societal issues with safety, accountability, and sustainability. 

We are looking for 5 Undergraduate Research Assistants (URAs) to join the Initiative with a summer internship (housing will be provided), which will be renewable for the Fall Semester (as a Student Worker). The URAs are expected to join a team tasked with information compilation, analysis, and discussion. They will collaborate closely in developing high-profile work with the supervision of a multidisciplinary team of Notre Dame faculty.

The Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society leverages data science, AI, & ML for social good. Lucy engages with the Notre Dame community & beyond through funded research projects & collaborations, educational workshops, and special events.

Important Information:

Summer Internship (Jun 1st to July 28th): $6500 stipend for 8 weeks + housing

Fall Semester: at $15/hour, 10h/week

Primary Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include:

  1. identifying relevant policies and regulations concerning AI and related topics (e.g., data privacy)
  2. writing summaries on policies and regulations
  3. retrieving opinions/reactions from relevant stakeholders on such documents.

URAs who contribute to any published or presented work will be properly acknowledged.

Additional Requirements

In addition to the responsibilities above, all URAs will be expected to participate in regular meetings of the AI Governance Initiative and present/discuss their findings. URAs may be asked to participate in meetings with other organizations within the scope of the Initiative.

Work Environment

A room at Flanner Hall will be provided for the group’s activities for the Summer Semester. Two weekly meetings (1 hour) will be held to discuss findings and assess progress. For the Fall Semester, meetings will shift to weekly at a time that suits the entire group. This job is performed in a hazard-free environment and clean atmosphere. Accommodations/flexibility is available for tasks unsuitable for team members.

Minimum Qualifications for the Position

  • Current Notre Dame undergraduate with interest (preferably demonstrated) in the societal impact of technology, particularly AI
  • Service orientation (values inclusivity, courtesy, patience, resourcefulness, problem-solving)
  • Maintaining confidentiality is required.
  • Adaptability (mindset/perspective that is open to learning new processes/systems quickly and open to working to respond to changing circumstances quickly); we’ll do our best to provide individual support for learning/growing/gaining confidence in this role.
  • Organizational proficiency, including the ability to manage time-based on work priorities (we do our best to provide a structure that makes priorities clear and manageable)
  • Detail-oriented (or the ability to follow an aid/set of instructions that we co-create/revise iteratively based on the way you learn/work best)
  • Ability to work as a team, as well as independently (most of the position’s tasks will need a divide and conquer approach as a group to complete a task)
