In this short talk, Ahmed Abbasi, Joe and Jane Giovanini Professor of IT, Analytics, and Operations, will describe his 20-year journey from machine learning towards human-centered AI.
As part of this journey, Abbasi will talk about how Google Scholar nearly ended his academic career before it even started, and how Shakespeare and Alexander Hamilton helped him advance the state of the art for sentiment analysis and natural language processing.
He will also describe why the most accurate phishing detector still couldn’t protect tens of millions of users. Or how a large telecommunications provider with multi-million dollar real-time monitoring failed to detect a major customer churn incident.
Professor Abbasi will conclude by discussing ongoing research in our Human-centered Analytics Lab that is pondering important policy questions like, “Is responsible AI impossible AI?“
