ND Learning and the Lucy Family Institute for Data and Society at the University of Notre Dame seeks candidates for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Responsible AI for Education. This role involves practical experience as well as innovative research in engaging faculty and students with the rapidly advancing landscape of AI technology in the support of teaching and learning.
The position will involve collaboration with experts across the Kaneb Center for Teaching Excellence, the Office of Digital Learning, Teaching and Learning Technologies, the Lucy Family Institute for Data and Society, and ND Learning’s and the Lucy Family Institute’s network of partners across the University of Notre Dame.
The postdoc will be co-mentored by Professor Ron Metoyer, Vice President and Associate Provost for Teaching and Learning and Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, and Professor Nitesh Chawla, Director of Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society and Frank M. Freimann Professor of Computer Science & Engineering.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- PhD in a relevant field (Education, Digital Humanities, Computer Science, Educational Technology, Instructional Design) received within the last five years.
- Experience with advancing and using generative AI tools, particularly in the teaching and learning context
- Knowledge of pedagogical and assessment theories and practices.
- Excellent analytical, research, and communication skills and experience publishing in top peer-reviewed journals and conferences.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow Position: Social Determinants of Health and Racial Disparities in Cancer

The Health Equity Data Lab (HEDL) at the Lucy Family Institute for Data and Society (LFIDS) seeks highly motivated and enthusiastic candidates for a Resident Scholar Postdoctoral Fellow in the area of racial disparities and social determinants of health in cancer incidence and outcomes. This exciting interdisciplinary project lies at the convergence of network science and bioinformatics, and is led and managed by two PIs who are experts in their respective fields: Prof. Meenal Datta in the College of Engineering (cancer biology) and Prof. Margaret Traeger in the Mendoza College of Business (network science). This institute-supported project centers around collection and evaluation of social, health, and biological data to identify actionable paths forward to reduce cancer burden and improve survivorship in the nation’s most vulnerable communities.
Qualifications:
Successful candidate must have the following qualifications:
- PhD or equivalent in Network Science, Data Science, Bioinformatics, Sociology, Biology, or a similar field.
- Experience in robust data science techniques (e.g., with R, Python)

Post-Doctoral Researcher in Leveraging Machine Learning for Materials Discovery

Description:
We are currently recruiting a dedicated full-time postdoctoral researcher to work on a “Leveraging Machine Learning for Materials Discovery” project, focusing on molecular simulations of soft materials (e.g., polymers, liquids) and novel machine learning techniques for property prediction and material design/optimization. The primary objective is to generate data for soft materials from simulations and develop machine learning models based on the data. The postdoc will be directly hired by the Lucy Family Institute’s initiative on AI and materials. The position is for a one-year term, renewable for one more year, pending performance review. The postdoc will be a residential scholar within the Lucy Family Institute office space as well as an active participant within the Lucy Postdoctoral Scholar Community to enable greater collaboration between the Institute faculty and other postdoctoral scholars who are recruited through this initiative. While Profs. Luo and Jiang will serve as the primary advisors, the postdoc will have opportunities to interact with multiple faculty experts in AI and experiments at Notre Dame. The Health Equity Data Lab (HEDL) at the Lucy Family Institute for Data and Society (LFIDS) seeks highly motivated and enthusiastic candidates to fill several Resident Scholar Postdoctoral Fellow positions. Launched less than a year ago, the HEDL at the Lucy Family Institute is working to advance interdisciplinary research and translation at the intersection of health equity and data science / AI, identified through a collaborative process.
The vision of HEDL is to become the pre-eminent convening center of discussions, problem scoping, and solutions on health equity data and responsible AI for health & wellbeing. Post-doctoral research associates will play a critical role in working with the Notre Dame community and the industry to develop novel, groundbreaking research that helps execute this vision, supporting ongoing research projects and data analysis aimed at uncovering and addressing health disparities and investigating the role of multiple social determinants of health in population well-being.
There are several possible areas of research for interested candidates:
1. Maternal Health
Working under the guidance of the Health Equity Data Lab Director and faculty lead Prof. Santosh Kumar, the postdoctoral fellow will extensively work on an impact evaluation project of maternal health and nutrition intervention in the state of Indiana. The fellow will contribute to new and ongoing research activities, including formulation and execution of all stages of research. You will also participate in collecting, managing, and analyzing data, generating reports, and presenting key findings from the research work.
2. Health Equity-Specific Pillars:

- Beyond Human Resources – the health and well-being of communities
- The Health Workforce of the Future
Under each of these provocations are research projects that are supported by Notre Dame’s academic community and partner industries. All current and future projects have the potential to make a large impact in the health equity data field.
Qualifications:
Successful candidates must have the following qualifications:
1. Ph.D. in a relevant field (e.g., Economics, public health, Public Policy, epidemiology, statistics, global health) with strong quantitative and writing skills.
2. Expertise in applied microeconomics methods and research design and data analysis
3. Experience in designing and conducting empirical research in nutrition, maternal child health, public health, and social determinants of health.
4. Demonstrated experience in qualitative or quantitative research skills, including data analysis and interpretation, excellent written and oral communication skills, and ability to work independently and with interdisciplinary collaborators.
5. Experience in causal analysis, spatial analysis ArcGIS, QGIS, qualitative analysis software (NVivo, Atlas), and programming languages (e.g. R, Python, Stata). Substantial experience with randomized controlled trials and/or machine learning is strongly preferred.
6. Excellent organizational and project management skills with attention to detail; ability to work in a diverse team environment that includes both academia and health and business industry teams; commitment to promoting health equity and addressing disparities in population health.

Of special interest to this position are topics of sexual and reproductive health measure development, maternal health measure development, health-related comparative studies, or related subjects. The post-doctoral fellow with work with Dr. Sarah Mustillo and Dr. Nitesh Chawla, as well as other faculty and staff at the HEDL and industry partners from multiple major organizations in the health care field. This fellowship presents unique opportunities for post-doctoral researchers to gain research experience, and professional development, and work on a national project with a dynamic interdisciplinary team.
Qualifications:
Open to applicants from any relevant discipline, including but not limited to social and behavioral sciences (e.g., sociology, psychology, public health, political science).
- Must have received a doctoral degree from an accredited educational institution by the start of appointment.
- Strong interest and research experience in quantitative methodology required including data management (merging datasets, recoding variables, cleaning data), and data analysis (categorical data analysis and regression), and experience managing research projects.
- Interest and experience in qualitative methodology, including conducting interviews and analyzing interview data, is a plus.
- Experience in any of the following areas is desirable: machine learning, multi-modal data integration, imbalanced learning, and responsible AI topics.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills are required.
- Demonstrated successful dissemination of scholarship would be an advantage.
