Nuno Moniz, Associate Research Professor of the Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society, has been named Associate Director of the Data, Inference, Analysis, and Learning (DIAL) Lab, a research laboratory that, through innovations and fundamental advances in data science and artificial intelligence (AI), is dedicated to creating and developing solutions for the social good.

“I’m extremely honored to join the DIAL Lab,” says Professor Moniz. “The DIAL Lab has been at the forefront of AI and data science research for years in multiple topics, and the opportunity to work with such an impressive cohort of students and collaborate with Nitesh on this is exciting.”

“My main objective and expectation are to help our students unleash their full potential and make sure that we’re shaping the next generation of academia and industry to be extremely prepared but also conscious of the societal impact and ethical issues surrounding our work.”, said the Portuguese professor and researcher concerning his objectives for the role of associate director at the DIAL Lab.

With the addition of Professor Moniz, Nitesh Chawla, also the Founding Director of the Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society, says “Nuno is an exceptional talent, who is enthusiastic about collaborations, creative in his thinking, and brings deep interest in students’ mentorship and education. I am looking forward to working together in advancing scholarship, while also bridging the last mile challenge of translation to achieve societal impact.”

Nuno Moniz joined Notre Dame in August 2022 as an Associate Research Professor at the Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society. Moniz’s research focuses on machine learning, investigating problems such as imbalanced learning, data privacy, and responsible AI. He is particularly interested in interdisciplinary efforts to understand the real-world impact of intelligent systems. Before joining the Lucy Family Institute, Nuno was a Researcher in INESC TEC and an Invited Professor at the University of Porto (Portugal).
