The Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society has announced a new cohort of Lucy Graduate Scholars.
Each spring, the Lucy Scholars program welcomes applications from full-time enrolled doctoral students from across University disciplines.

As ambassadors to the Lucy graduate research community, the 2025-2027 Cohort will support the Institute’s annual research theme, “Inclusive AI for Social Good,” by designing workshops, panels and social events as part of Lucy Family Institute programming.
2025-2027 Lucy Graduate Scholars Cohort:
- Bingxue An, Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics
Advisor: Tiffany Tang, Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professor of Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics - Sanchita Chakraborty, Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics
Advisor: Alan Lindsay, Associate Professor of Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics - Jonathan Karr, Computer Science and Engineering
Advisor: Nitesh Chawla, Founding Director, Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society and Frank M. Freimann Professor of Computer Science and Engineering - Xinyue Liu, Anthropology
Advisor: Luis Felipe R. Murillo, Assistant Professor and Faculty Fellow at the Notre Dame Technology Ethics Center - Fabian D. Maldonado, Sociology

During the two-year program, scholars receive mentorship from Institute faculty and staff as they seek to advance interdisciplinary and co-innovative graduate student research.
The new cohort will join the 2024-2026 Scholars cohort to collaborate on data science and artificial intelligence (AI) projects and create professional development and education opportunities. Scholars work to design community-building events for University students that address some of society’s most pressing challenges. They are also given opportunities to present their research. In past years, scholars were welcomed to present research updates at Lucy Institute luncheons and at the Lucy Annual Celebrations.
This year, scholars will have the opportunity to present at the RISE AI Conference, a convening of global researchers from academia and industry to explore how AI can address societal challenges while promoting responsible, inclusive, safe, and ethical AI innovation.
“Lucy Graduate Scholars represent the exceptional interdisciplinary interests that support the University’s deep commitment to inspiring collaborative data science and AI research,” said Nitesh Chawla, founding director of the Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society and the Frank M. Freimann Professor of Computer Science and Engineering. “As AI continues to shape nearly every facet of our society, the Lucy Graduate Scholars program continues to welcome fresh perspectives that drive interdisciplinary convergence of data science and AI innovation as a force for good.”
